Universities
apart from education are focusing on research work,
trainings and field oriented assignments both at
undergraduate as well as at post graduate levels.
University-Industry linkage plays very important
role to produce engineers capable of fulfilling
the needs of society. Developing linkage of UET’s
with National Highway Authority (NHA) will be highly
fruitful to achieve the same.
This task shall be a combined effort
by the University of Engineering & Technology,
Lahore and Taxila with National Highway Authority
to work together on a common problem of premature
failure of pavements in Pakistan and to address
its practical solutions. The task shall be completed
with mutual share of universities and HRTC on the
basis of availability of facilities. Inductions
of research scholars, academia and engineers working
in the field will be made under the umbrella of
Highway Research Training Centre (HRTC) to complete
the set task in specified time frame . The Task
shall be completed in two phases i.e Phase-I (Lab
testing (Task 1, 2 & 3)) & Phase-II (Trail
Section) and software development for the design
of Pavement Structures. The software shall be named
as PAKPAVE and will be built on to meet the specific
conditions of traffic and environment in Pakistan.
Under Phase II , can be started in parallel with
Phase I.
In Phase-I, Task-1, selection of
at least six (06) aggregate sources in Pakistan
shall be worked out and two (02) best aggregate
sources will be identified for the research study
. In Task-1 Laboratory testing shall be carried
out on aggregates as per ASTM, AASHTO and BSI requirements
at UET Taxila. Aggregate gradation mentioned by
NHA in its specifications i.e. Class “B”
shall be exercised to prepare different mixes. This
gradation will then be compared with the newly established
SUPERPAVE gradation. Bitumen manufactured by Attock
Refinery Limited (ARL), Rawalpindi and National
Refinery Limited (NRL), Karachi shall be used in
straight run as well as in modified form (using
two best polymers i.e. Elvaloy Terpolymer &
AC Ploymer ).
In Task-2, Characterization of
bitumen shall be carried out using the conventional
and rheological testing . In Task-3, Evaluation
of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) for both asphalt wearing
course and asphalt base course designed by both
Marshall Method of Mix Design as well as Superpave
Method of Mix Design shall be made for these binders,
polymers and aggregate types. Twenty four asphalt
concrete mixes comprising two aggregate gradations,
two mix design methods i.e. Marshall & Superpave
and two types of mix i.e. asphalt wearing course
& asphalt base course. Performance evaluation
and characterization of different asphalt mixes
shall be carried out using five well renowned testing
procedures.
Facility of equipments shall be
shared by UET Lahore, UET Taxila and HRTC for each
specific testing job. In addition, NHA would be
responsible for materials and financial assistance
and the Universities shall indulge their technical
expertise to complete the task fruitfully. At the
same time benefits in the shape of stipends and
research publications can be enjoyed by the Universities.
The UET will have full access to the data gathered
during this research study for publishing the data
locally and internationally. Testing charges to
be carried out in the universities shall be paid
by HRTC directly to UET, Lahore & UET Taxila
for each specific testing job. |
