Highway Engineering Course
Introduction

Development and progress of any country is gauged from the availability /competency of professional Engineers. It is internationally acknowledged that professional skills to meet sophisticated upcoming challenges can only be met by developing University-Industry Linkages. University at its part opens new innovations and emerging technologies for professionals and provides them opportunities to explore more depth of knowledge and skills. 

To assist the Highway Engineers, Material Engineers and Laboratory Technicians, Taxila institute of Transportation Engineering(TITE) at CED, UET Taxila offeres short courses in order to enhance the professional’s competency. These courses are specifically designed by providing an overview of highways materials i.e. soil, aggregates, bitumen and issues related to traffic engineering and course focuses on current practices, new developments and recent innovations.

Objective

Participants will be able;

  • to meet the basic requirements to characterize the engineering properties of materials being used in highways construction and would be capable to perform quality control tests in the laboratory.
  • Moreover, they would be able to understand the functional requirements of traffic engineers.
  • It will be useful in assessing the traffic related issues and their solutions

Course Schedual
Course duration      12 weeks
Weekly Classes  1 days/week (Saturday)
Timings 3:00 to 5:00PM (Traffic Engineering) 
5:00 to 7:00 (Pavement Materials & Design) 
Eligibility Criteria (Minimum):

Diploma in Civil Engineering
Intermediate (FA / F Sc) (with One year relative experience)
Matric with Science (Three year relative experience)

 

 

Highwav Material Training Course

Objective
To ensure that all tests used for materials acceptance are completed in accordance with approved AASHTO methods or alternate procedures as indicated.
Course Contents

This course is offered in two modules :

  • The first module includes soil and aggregates test methods and the
  • second module includes bitumen test methods.
First module
  • Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregate (AASHTO T-27)
  • Test Methods for Flat or Elongated Particles in Coarse Aggregate (ASTM D-4791).
  • Specific Gravity and Absorption of Coarse Aggregate (AASHTO T 85)
  • Resistance to Degradation of Small-Size Coarse Aggregate by Abrasion and Impact in the Los Angeles Machine (AASHTO T 96).
  • Test Methods for Impact Value of aggregates (BS 812-112).
    1. Test Methods for soil classification (T88-90, T89-90,T90-87).
Second module
  • Specific Gravity of Semi-Solid Bituminous Material (T202-03).
  • Penetration of Bituminous Material (T 49-03).
  • Softening Point of Bitumen (Ring and Ball Apparatus) (T53­96).
  • Flash & Fire Points by Cleveland Open Cup (T48-99).
  • Ductility of Bituminous Materials (T51-00).
