UET Olympiad 2012

Society from men has shifted its dependence over machines and machines then in principal rely on Software breathing inside. Software across the globe to a large extent effect local and foreign economy to an amount that could not be neglected, future of civilization today if relies on anything, it does on Software, the air driving machines and hence society.

SoftDesk was in fact nothing but the realization of the vision to empower students here with best of programming and technical knowledge, skill them with latest of IT tools, make them aware of latest developments in IT arena and in general provide them with opportunities to enhance their capabilities to match the standards of Industry and technology hub via arrangements of public seminars, workshops, conferences and events!

‘Android Hands On workshop’ for android application environment and real world apps. Development with speakers from Telenor and Aurora Solutions encapsulating an amount of almost a 100 students, both from inside and out of university sphere was indeed the first rose of SoftDesk. It was a tri-day workshop with a pre-session for newbie, a noticeable participation of teachers from various departments and their engrossing in Game development was something even SoftDesk didn’t anticipated for.

Success of Student week and that too to the heights it embarked, stated one thing on the legacy walls of UET taxila, that change was here, a colorful one. The spell of ‘UET Olympiad 2012’ under banner of SoftDesk left many ears cold and frozen, that spell was nothing but an ‘eerie thought’, considered many while others thought of it as a joke. But with a strong participation from over a dozen universities including NUST,UET Lahore, Comsats, Bahria and half a dozen more itself states all. A packed bus of participants from UET Lahore and covens from APCOM, HITEC and NUST was indeed a rare vision for every eye around. It all started on Friday,11th may,12 with Dean Telecom ‘Dr.Adeel Akram’ formally declaring the start for Olympiad in the opening ceremony held at conference hall. Patron in chief of SoftDesk ‘Dr.Tabassam Nawaz’ and SoftDesk Advisor ‘Engr.Ali Javed’ accompanied him there. Formally informal words from honorable Dean were followed up with couple from SoftDesk Advisor Engr. Ali Javed and vice president SoftDesk Amna Altaf. Promo was seconded by schedule and details of Olympiad categories and events included. Olympiad was divided into four categories with tags of Arts, Technical, Sports and Gaming, a score of events were shelled within.

Technical
Technical events included enthralling speed programming, showcasing project exhibition, mind challenging IT quiz and brain draining problem solving competitions. In speed programming, a set of 6 problems were asked to be solved in a clock of 3hours, amongst a dozen and half teams including both local and foreign teams, UET Lahore spiders came out victorious securing both 1st and 2nd position. IT quiz where teams had to go through question answer session after initial written portion, results were same all 3 teams crossing line for round 2 were from UET Lahore ,and so were the results 1st,2nd UET Lahore. Problem solving, where a duo of real life perplexes were presented for solution, amusingly again UET Lahore engineers proved to be the one with brains entitling their selves for 1st and 2nd spot, same could have been results from the showcases of project exhibition if not the Basit Munir from 10-SE have secured 2nd spot following of course the very UET Lahore for top.

Gaming
Perhaps the one with most relinquished events of Olympiad, messy’ FIFA -11, porches’ NFS most wanted, kings’ Tekken 3 and riffling Counter strike were amongst the plays here. FIFA-11, with two dozen soccer lovers out matched all with its free-kicks and penalty shots, a knock-out event where ozil of TE-11, proved too himself too good for all messi and rooney lovers, UET lahore’ bird were given red card in his first match here. Tekken 3, perhaps the only event where a couple of eve’s participated, if any in gaming catalogue, but the Adam’ sons here were in no mood for mercy, and they were thrashed out the next moment they dived in, boys from CP-10 and TE-10 here stood where none else could, but CP here proved himself an ace outnumbering his mate with 8-3 in a finale of 15 fights.NFS where Porsche and thrilling speed lovers were jogged in for the ‘Speed King’ title, Ahmed Raza of Computer Department came out the best gear handler dusting of Taimur Zahid from Telecom department and Runner up Ghazanfer Shah from Mechanical Department. Counter Strike, probably the only ‘hostelide’ game, if there exists one, teams from UET Lahore, Institute of Space Technology (IST) were there to challenge residents of Q-hall and I-hall, and so they did, final between IST and residents were disturbed hard by load shedding schedule and power mismanagement, IST snipers proved them to be the best in combat after a breathtaking finale.

Sports
‘Misbah can hit a six or not, one thing can you the only question here’, the prologue of super sixes were cherished by many .A total of 8 teams participated, including couple from HITEC, APCOM, employees and teachers along. Visitors here may complain of the hospitality of residents for none of them could make through the finals, a sigh for finalists because the most un-anticipated of rains resulted final in a draw. Futsal, the new name for soccer, where 16 teams each comprising of 6 players who came up with dancing feet and delicate moves, the foreigners team unbeaten victory throughout the tournament wasn’t that surprising, for Pakistan is yet to play football. A dozen of people with joggers in feet and glory in minds came for 100 meters race, APCOMS athlete here ran like none else, ended up being the ultimate speed runner of Olympiad. Chess, the mind wrestle board of geniuses, gave a dozen more to the total participants, with mind tiring witty moves, HITEC’ Newton here proved to be the one with matchless moves.

Arts
Colors speak to me, do they to you? Sketching, painting, wall graffiti, UET album and poster designing were amongst the proposed colors arenas’. Sketching, the art of colorless colors and where the hands and not the words speak, had 2 categories, sketch general and sketch UET who ended up with winners, former being owned by UET Lahore and later by resident Naina Emmanuel of 11-SE.UET Album, perhaps the only event where your ‘eye’ matters if you have a vision inside, a total of two dozen people came with their lens shutter for the very event. ‘Let’s paint love, with colors of freedom’ was the tagline for wall graffiti where the colors frosted on walls, spoke the words of freedom and of love. With duo from NUST and one from Punjab University, a total of 6 teams each of 3 members came with brushes and sprays and buckets of colors to paint the walls of UET taxila, locals of Q-hall with title ‘UET 2k2’ ended up being the best with knowhow of colors and how they speak! Poster designing, perhaps the least anticipated event of whole Olympiad showed Abeera Hafeez from CP-10 the best with graphical tools.
With a total of almost 400 participations including a 100 from other universities needs no superlatives to tell the success story of UET Olympiad 2012. The remarkable success of the trend setting Olympiad, the very first of its kind in the history of UET taxila, in a very limited budget with resources that needs not to be spoken of, states clearly the dedication with work, enthusiasm for achievement and believe that we can of team SoftDesk, and that if nothing promises of more to come by SoftDesk.

In the closing ceremony of the event, held on 12th May, 2012, Dean Faculty of Telecom & Information Engineering, UET Taxila, Prof. Dr. Adeel Akram distributed shields among the speakers and organizers of the event. In the climax the advisor of SoftDesk society Engr. Ali Javed expressed his thoughts about the event and honored the SoftDesk members by his words of praise and highly commended their efforts. In the end the advisor of SoftDesk society Engr. Ali Javed presented the shield to the Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Adeel Akram
