Introduction

The automobile industry in Pakistan has covered huge distances becoming an important player within the large-scale manufacturing sector in spurring economic growth. However still, sustainable development of the sector remains elusive especially in the context of trained and skilled human resource, product quality and adaptation of modern technologies. Overall production, localization of parts, consumer satisfaction, safety standards and compliance to global environmental regulations continue to fall short of expectations. Government of Pakistan formulated the Automotive Development Policy (2016 - 2021) envisaging development plans for the automobile industry in the country to facilitate higher volumes, attract investment, ensure enhanced competition and offer higher quality products in line with emerging opportunities both locally and globally. A balance needs to be created between industrial growth and availability of skilled manpower to steer the market through ever burdening technological and economic challenges.

Dissemination of the knowledge and experience concerning automotive engineering technology requires establishment of a dedicated research, education and training program equipped with expert faculty and necessary labs. This will enable the development of skilled human resource focused on innovation and capable of employing knowledge inputs for the sustainable development of the automobile sector in Pakistan.

The above facts and existing facilities show the immediate need for establishing an up-to-date program in Automotive Engineering Technology. This program shall be an essential step towards achieving the Pakistan vision 2025 goals and objectives set in the Pakistan Automotive Policy 2016 - 2021.

PROGRAM IMPACT

Updated research teaching and training can play a major role in terms of improving the prevailing conditions of high-end employment through providing a skilled workforce that is directly and indirectly needed by Pakistan. The proposed project will have a multi-dimensional impact, it will :

• Create a nucleus for research, education, training and development in the field of Automotive Engineering Technology.
• Produce qualified manpower for developing national Automotive Technology policies.
• Enhance the public awareness for Automotive Technology through offering workshops, seminars and training programs.
• Provide updated research and training facilities to a wide spectrum of technologists, engineers and scientists.

PROGRAM OUTPUT

In addition to development of local resource in Automotive Engineering Technology, this program will serve also for human resource development. It is estimated that the department will train thousands of engineers and technicians in the years to come. It will provide an ideal platform for research and technology development in automotive sector. Sustaining the Pakistani success in the 21st century will require making effective use of the talents and abilities of citizens and the program will contribute to providing academic and technical training for engineers and technologists.
