POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM

The degree of telecommunication engineering has been created to produce professionals with a thorough understanding of the theoretical principles of the new communication technologies. The course provides a firm foundation of these theoretical principles and is reinforced by practical work involving the design, testing and implementation of actual systems. The course aims to produce engineers who are versatile, adaptable and possess technical knowledge and analytical capability together with some of the practical design skills relevant to the modern telecommunications industry.

Why study this subject?
Electronics is essential to the modern world of instant global communication. The subject has a history going back 60 years or more, but it is only in the last 30 years that electronics has become indispensable in the form of powerful and low-cost computers accessible to all. Applications include: digital media for audio and video storage and reproduction; satellite navigation systems which can pinpoint a location anywhere on earth to within a meter; digital cameras and camcorders at affordable prices; and automated manufacturing that makes many products reliable and inexpensive.

Telecommunications have been revolutionized by modern electronics, making possible worldwide instant telephony with automated international dialing and, of course, the internet is possible only because of advanced optical communication which links the continents with sufficient capacity to carry all the intercontinental internet and telephony traffic over submarine cables. None of this would be possible without the technology, but it is also the design and development engineers and graduates in electronic engineering and telecommunications engineering that make possible the products that we all use, directly or indirectly, in our daily lives.

Demand for telecommunications engineers is high throughout the world. The profession offers a range of careers from design and development to marketing, management, production engineering and applications engineering. Graduates also find employment in other disciplines because of the highly numerate nature of the subject.

Masters in Telecommunication Engineering

About the Program
The Masters in Telecommunication Engineering Program is specially tailored keeping in view the innovations in the Telecommunication sector, the global trends and challenges of the new millennium. The program is designed to produce top quality Telecommunication Professionals capable of meeting the challenges of the current fast changing Telecommunication environment. The program provides an optimal balance between academic and professional contents, comprehensive coverage of Telecommunication theories and techniques, as well as the latest Telecommunication technologies.
Program Goals
The department offers postgraduate programs with the following objectives:

  • Provide Post-Graduate level training to Engineers from Bachelors of Telecommunication Engineering through Master level degree program.
  • Allow R&D and Professional Trainings in relevant technologies and areas including Information Technology, Optical Fiber Systems, Digital switching, Digital Subscriber Loop, Digital Radio Systems, ISDN and Broadband Networks, Digital and Broadband Switching, Voice over IP, as well as Mobile and Wireless Communication Systems.
  • Provide a pool of expertise for defining optimal technology paths for the evolution of Telecommunication networks and services. These experts will be able to design the future telecommunication networks in our country and provide consultancy services as part of the University's goal of contributing to the industry.
  • To provide much needed technical manpower that are well versed with the myriad of new telecommunication products being floated in the world market today.

Admissions
The admissions in this program are conducted on yearly basis (usually in June/July every year). The applicants can opt for Full-Time Studies (Program Duration: 18 months) or Part-Time Studies (Program Duration: max 48 months). Whereas: the students who opt for full-time studies have to perform TA/RA duties with the Principal Investigators in the department and these students are given fee wavier as well as 15000-Rs (Fifteen Thousand Rupees) a month stipend.

PhD in Telecommunication Engineering

About the Program
The PhD in Telecommunication Engineering degree is awarded for candidates who successfully complete the taught courses and research components of the program. The students are required to complete a program of advanced courses in engineering. The students are also required to carry out an independent investigation of a specialized area of engineering. Candidates for this degree are supervised by experienced researchers (PI: Principal Investigators) and are expected to demonstrate initiative in their approach and innovation in their work. Ph.D. Candidates prepare and present a thesis on their chosen area. Research may be undertaken in several topics corresponding to the areas of focus identified by the department as given:

  1. Wireless and Mobile Communication Group (PI: Prof. Dr. Adeel Akram)
  2. RF and Microwave Group (PI: Asst. Prof. Dr. Yasar Amin)
  3. Antenna Design Group (PI: Asst. Prof. Dr. Rashid Saleem)
  4. Optical Communication and Networks Group (PI: Asst. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rameez Asif)

Program Goals

The aim of the Ph.D. in Telecommunication Engineering program is to produce graduates able to conduct research independently at the highest level of originality and quality.
The goals of the program are to:

  • Provide graduates with high specialization in their field of study
  • Equip graduates with research skills and techniques
  • Equip graduates with research communication skills
  • Equip graduates with research management skills
  • Provide graduates with good understanding of the research environment and its requirements
  • Equip graduates with personal effectiveness skills
  • Produce graduates who will make substantial contributions to academics, industry, business, and the community
  • Undertake and publish research that is relevant to industry and business, and is highly regarded by the international community

Admissions

The admissions in this program are conducted on yearly basis (usually in June/July every year). The applicants can opt for Full-Time Studies (Program Duration: 36 months) or Part-Time Studies (Program Duration: max 60 months). Whereas: the students who opt for full-time studies have to perform TA/RA duties with the Principal Investigators in the department and these students are given fee wavier as well as 50000-Rs (Fifty Thousand Rupees) a month stipend.
